Soul-searching at #IAMLOVE

When I saw #IAMLOVE on Eventbrite, I was curious. I was going through a rough patch in my life and I needed to be rejuvenated. Instead of seeing a therapist, to help me deal with my emotions, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and purchased a ticket.

I read through the description once again and a few things captured my attention:

Self-love is about being good to yourself. But, what does being good to yourself mean?

  • Putting yourself first.
  • Doing things that bring you joy.
  • Accepting the good, bad and not so pretty things about yourself.
  • Dreaming big.
  • Listening to your intuition.
  • Resting.
  • Refusing to seek approval from others, as the only approval that matters is your own.

The words highlighted stood out to me as I needed to be myself again. Having a fresh start was a must for me. It had to be done. To be honest, I was nervous. I was not sure about what I was going to hear, let alone what I was going to say…. I thought to myself, am I too broken for this event? I need to move on, sure. But, can I be positive?

During the event

The event was held at The Arc Centre, London. On arrival, I was greeted by Chantel and was offered a beverage with a choice of a piece of cake and some fruits. She made me feel super comfortable, probably because I arrived on my own. There were approximately 30 women in the room I wasn’t alone after all.

I found a seat at the front as I was keen to hear her journey and thoughts. I couldn’t pay attention to her. I had to re-focus. As the evening went on, I felt as if she was speaking directly to me. I gasped for air. But, how could she know what I went through? Stop being silly, I thought.

She introduced methods that helped us with negative thoughts, for example, flipping a feeling. So, if you said “I feel like crap today”, instead you should say “I feel wonderful today”. She also wanted us to smile and laugh more. I haven’t done that in a while… She had one rule. “We will not have negative discussions in this space”. I loved that!

After the event

Once the event came to an end, I wandered around the room introducing myself. “Hi, I’m Vanessa. What’s your name?” I asked at least 5 people, engaged in a few conversations and wondered to the exit. I was stopped unexpectedly and given a piece of cake to take home.

My thoughts? The host was lovely, ambitious and kind-hearted. Her journey on self-love and empowering women was very inspirational. She’s given me plenty of things to think about: my life; expectations; and self-love. One of the things I plan on working on is to love myself for who I am, embracing and accepting the good and the bad. Furthermore, no more negative thinking. No more!

I would definitely recommend this event for anyone who feels that they need a support system, looking for new ways to embark on their journey or even if you are just curious, this could be for you. I’m not sure when the next event is, but feel free to look it up on Eventbrite.

Are you on a self-love journey? I would love to know your thoughts on who influenced you or if you have any ideas that would help a reader. Please share them below, thank you.

  1. Wishing you the best of luck on your self-love journey. It took me a while to stay on that path.
Having on and off relationships didn’t help either. Tried therapy – it didn’t work. 😦

SN: You’re courageous for going to the event after seeing it online. I have been trying to push myself to step out of my comfort zone to go to events for the longest haha.

This event is what I needed. It’s good to step outside of your comfort zone once in a while. I was really shy, trust me.
